The film "The Super Mario Bros" colossal profits, reaches a new record

The latest movie "The Super Mario Bros" has managed to generate tremendous profits. The film grossed more than $200 million in the U.S. and Canada for its five-day opening, according to a press release, and about $377 million worldwide — the latter tops the record for an animated film held previously from "Frozen 2".

That marks the biggest global box office of the year, with "Super Mario Bros." edging out "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," which brought in $225.3 million during its February opening. The film is based on the world of Nintendo's classic 1985 video game Super Mario and stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson and Sebastian Maniscalco are some other familiar names in the cast.

Actor Charles Martinet, the longtime official voice of Mario in the games — who many fans of the game felt should have been cast as the title character instead of Pratt — makes a special appearance in the film. Super Mario Bros. follows Brooklyn plumber Mario and Luigi as they are transported into a mysterious pipe while working underground to fix a water pipe. The brothers wander into a "magical new world," and when they're separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi, according to a synopsis on the film's website.

The strong opening is a healthy sign for theaters heading into the blockbuster summer season, with the next Guardians of the Galaxy film, also starring Pratt, opening in May. You can watch the movie "The Super Mario Bros" now at Cineplexx cinemas.
