The 80s plot to kill Queen Elizabeth II is revealed

Queen Elizabeth II faced a possible assassination threat during a 1983 visit to the United States. The BBC reports that this was revealed by newly released FBI documents. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a dossier of files relating to the late queen's travels to the US following her death last year. They show how the FBI, which helped ensure the monarch's security during her visits, was concerned about IRA threats.

The death threat was made to a San Francisco police officer. According to the filing, an officer who frequented an Irish bar in San Francisco alerted federal agents to a phone call from a man he had met there. The officer said the man told him he was seeking revenge for his daughter, who had been killed in Northern Ireland by a rubber bullet. The threat came on February 4, 1983, about a month before Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip's visit to California.

It is unclear what action was taken at Yosemite, but the visit continued and no details of the arrests were released by the FBI. The classified 102-page document was uploaded to the Vault, the FBI's information site, following a Freedom of Information Act request filed by US media. Many of the late Queen's state visits to the US, including a 1983 visit to the West Coast, came during heightened tensions amid unrest in Northern Ireland.
