After the release of Peter Jackson's trilogy, the new "Lord of the Rings" movies are back

The announcement comes 20 years after Peter Jackson's trilogy was released and amid a franchise tussle at Warner Bros. Discovery Cinema is returning to Middle-earth, with Warner Bros. and New Line signing a deal to make more adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Warner Bros Discovery chief executive David Zaslav announced on Thursday in an earnings call that a deal had been reached to make "multiple" films based on JRR Tolkien's books.

The cost of the deal with Embracer Group, the Swedish gaming company that owns the rights to much of Tolkien's world, has not yet been disclosed. The films will be developed through Warner Bros. production company New Line Cinema, which produced the trilogy directed by Peter Jackson between 2001 and 2003.

These films grossed almost $3 billion worldwide, with the third installment, The Return of the King, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture at the Academy Awards. In a joint statement to Variety, Jackson and his two closest "Lord of the Rings" collaborators, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, said that Warner Bros. and Embracer "have kept us informed every step of the way" about new movies. Jackson, Walsh and Boyens said:

"We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the future of the franchise."

Embracer acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings films, games, merchandise, theme parks and productions when it acquired Middle-earth Enterprises in 2022. Lee Guinchard, CEO of Embracer Freemode said:

"Following the recent acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises, we are thrilled to embark on this new collaborative journey with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, bringing the incomparable world of JRR Tolkien to the big screen in new and exciting ways .We understand how beloved these works are, and working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we plan to honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values."

New Warner Bros. film division heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, who oversee Warner and New Line films, are behind the new multi-year deal that means the studio can develop feature films based on both Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

New Line dhe Warner Bros Animation po punojnë për “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim”, një film i animuar i vendosur 183 vjet përpara ngjarjeve në The Lord of the Rings. Amazon vazhdon të zotërojë të drejtat televizive për The Lord of the Rings. Shfaqja e parë e gjigantit të teknologjisë, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, kushtoi më shumë se 450 milion dollarë për t’u realizuar.
