The first 9 photos from "House of the Dragon", the prequel to GoT, are released

The first photos from the first follow-up show to the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones (GoT) have been released, along with nine new photos from the prequel series.

Set hundreds of years before the time of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), House of Dragons dramatizes the events of A Dance with Dragons. The name was given to one of the most devastating civil wars Westeros has ever seen, which tore apart the great Targaryen empire at its height. The early seeds of this conflict were planted decades ago with the Grand Council of Harrenhal, seen in this first photo.

As King Jaehaerys Targaryen (seen in the center by actor Michael Carter) neared the end of his life, there were many claimants to the Iron Throne. So the peaceful ruler convened a council to determine the succession. On the right is Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best), flanked by her husband, Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) of House Velaryon. She had the most direct blood claim to the throne, but because she was a woman, the Council named King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) the next Lord of the Seven Kings. Eagle-eyed fans of author George RR Martin's books, especially Fire&Blood, note that King Jaehaerys was not present at the Great Council. There may be a reason for this. According to House of the Dragon co-showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal, "The book is the subjective narrative [of Targaryen history] because of the nature of how it was written, which is a drawing of a master from three different sources who did or did not witness the events they were writing about. Just like how the Bible was made." The show, Condal adds, will be the "objective account."
