Twelve people are still missing after a fire engulfed a ferry sailing from Greece to Italy on Friday morning, writes Greek media Kathimerini .

A total of 241 passengers and 51 crew members were on board the 'Euroferry Olympia' ferry when the fire broke out, and rescue boats have already relocated most of them to the island of Corfu.

The Greek Coast Guard said 280 people were rescued, but 12 people were still missing from the 183-meter ferry that caught fire near the island of Corfu on the road from Igoumenitsa, a port in western Greece, to the Italian port of Brindisi. , a nine-hour journey.

The missing passengers were from Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Lithuania, the Greek coast guard said.

"The fire is still active and firefighters have tried to put it out, " Transport Minister Giannis Plakiotakis told Sky television on Saturday.

Late Friday, Greek crews rescued two people, a Bulgarian national and an Afghan, who were not on the official list of missing persons. They were taken to Corfu hospital, the company said in a statement.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said 127 of its citizens were on board. The cause of the fire is being investigated and authorities will have more evidence once the ship is towed to a safe place, Plakiotakis said.
