Chaos in the Serbian Parliament, opposition MPs throw smoke bombs

An incident occurred on Tuesday in the Serbian Parliament, where opposition MPs stood up from their seats and set off pyrotechnic devices in the hall.

This came to pass after the ruling coalition MPs approved the agenda, which the opposition opposed.

Opposition MPs approached the speaker's desk, activated red and black smoke bombs and unfurled a banner that read "Serbia is rising to overthrow the regime."

The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty team, present at the scene, reported that smoke from the pyrotechnic devices could be smelled even in the corridors of the assembly.

The government previously approved the 62-point agenda, which also included amendments to the Law on Higher Education.

The latter are a demand of students protesting in Serbia, since the deadly collapse of a shelter at the Novi Sad Railway Station on November 1st of last year.

The session also had to approve the resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević, which he offered on January 28, under pressure from student protests.

The opposition demanded that only amendments to the Higher Education Law be on the agenda, saying that the Government, which has announced its resignation, cannot adopt important laws.

Some opposition MPs in the hall also held photographs with bloody hands and banners that read: "General strike", "Students have the right" and "Teachers, we are with you"./ REL
