Students in Skopje protest Kocani tragedy, honor disco fire victims

North Macedonia is in mourning after the tragedy that occurred at the Pulse discotheque in Kocani, where 59 young people lost their lives and 160 others were injured. The tragic event occurred on Saturday night, when a fire broke out after a fireworks display during a concert at the club in the village of Kocani, 110 kilometers east of Skopje.

The fire, believed to have been caused by sparks from fireworks reaching the ceiling made of flammable materials, quickly spread and spread thick smoke within a very short period of time, leading to a major tragedy. North Macedonia's Interior Minister, Pance Toskovski, confirmed that the fire quickly spread throughout the discotheque and caused the loss of many lives.

The facility was operating without a permit and had a host of safety deficiencies, including a lack of proper firefighting equipment and two emergency exits, while the use of fireworks was also illegal. The disco, which was packed with 500 people on the night of the accident, was hosting a performance by the popular hip-hop group "DNK."

A wave of protests has erupted in Skopje, where hundreds of students have gathered in front of the university to honor the victims of the tragedy. A psychology student expressed her indignation, saying: "I don't believe it was an accident, but a murder, resulting from all these anomalies. We cannot remain silent."
