German Chancellor Scholz supports the deportation of illegal migrants

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday he wants to increase deportations of illegal migrants, days after a knife attack in the western city of Solingen.

"Evictions must be accelerated, 'with legal regulation if necessary'," Scholz said during a visit to Solingen.

The chancellor also called for "consistent and practical enforcement" of existing laws, including those for migrants who apply for asylum in Germany rather than in the first European Union country where they arrive in breach of the Dublin Regulation.

"It would certainly make sense to create a special group to study this," Chancellor Scholz added.

Three people were killed and eight others were injured in last Friday's attack on a square in the city center of Solingen.

The 26-year-old suspect, who is originally from Syria, was taken into custody by order of the court, reports the German agency DPA.

The attacker, who is suspected of being a member of the Islamic State terror group, was reportedly expected to be deported to Bulgaria upon arrival in Germany in 2022, but police were unable to locate him./REL
