Albania leads the region in terms of the number of prisoners, fourth in Europe

Albania ranks first in the Balkans and fourth in Europe for the number of prisoners in relation to the population, according to the latest data published by Eurostat for 2023.

According to the report, Albania had 182 prisoners for every 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that significantly exceeds the European Union average of 111. In total, 5,017 convicts were registered in Albanian prisons, of whom 4,919 were male and only 76 were female. Also, 125 of the prisoners turned out to be foreign citizens.

At the European level, Turkey holds the first place with 342 prisoners per 100 thousand inhabitants, followed by Poland and Hungary. While in the Balkan region, Albania tops the list, followed by Serbia and Montenegro.

In addition to the high number of prisoners, Albania is also among the countries with overcrowding of cells, a recurring problem that raises concerns about detention conditions and the rights of prisoners.
