Britain moves towards restrictions on students from countries most likely to

The British government could restrict visa applications from students living in countries considered more likely to seek asylum, in a bid to reduce migration, a government official has said.

The move comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party was punished in local elections in England last week by voters angry over issues such as illegal migration.

The government is expected to publish a policy document, known as a "white paper", next week that will set out a plan on how it aims to reduce net migration, which reached 728,000 people in the year to June last year.

"The white paper on migration we are preparing will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system," the Home Office said in a statement, Reuters reports.

High levels of legal migration have long dominated political debate in Britain and were one of the main drivers for the Brexit referendum in 2016.

Of the 108,000 people who sought asylum in Britain last year, 16,000 had student visas, government figures show. The government does not provide a breakdown by nationality of those who had student visas and then sought asylum.

But the government said people from Pakistan, Nigeria and Sri Lanka are more likely to seek asylum in Britain after arriving on a work, student or visitor visa.

Following the Labour Party's poor results in local elections last week, some Labour MPs called on the government to take a more decisive approach to issues such as reducing migration./REL
