May 11th Elections, Bylykbashi: Extend the validity period of documents

The Vice President of the Democratic Party, Oerd Bylykbashi, has raised concerns that over 466,000 citizens with the right to vote in Albania may be left out of the May 11 electoral process.

In a statement to the media, he described the government's decision to extend the validity of documents only for citizens abroad as discriminatory and unconstitutional.

Bylykbashi asked the Albanian government to immediately issue a normative act to extend the validity of documents for everyone, in order to guarantee the right to vote.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE DP, OERD BYLYKBASHI

Today, there are 466,000 eligible citizens who do not have a valid identity document, neither an ID card nor a passport. The Albanian government extended the validity only for voters living outside Albania, discriminating against those in Albania.

This discrimination is unconstitutional and jeopardizes the right to vote of these 466,000 citizens who reside in Albania, and on May 11th want to vote and express their constitutional right. We ask the government to issue the normative act without delay and extend the validity of identity documents for electoral purposes only, so that these citizens on May 11th will have the opportunity to vote.

We ask the CEC, as the supreme body in the conduct of the elections, to strongly request the government so that these citizens have the opportunity to vote. We also draw the attention of international election observation mechanisms, such as the OSCE-ODIHR, the OSCE, the Council of Europe and any other international institution, to point out this violation of the rights of Albanians. This should be done now, immediately, so that on May 11, all Albanians have the right to express themselves for change, to change this autocratic regime.
