Some are convicted and others are awaiting a court decision, from the country's 20 prisons 3,036 people will be able to vote on May 11. The majority of those eligible to vote are pre-trial detainees, while the rest are those who remain in prison as convicted prisoners.


Meanwhile, there are 1,357 individuals who have temporarily lost their right to vote due to the decriminalization law.

The majority of them, 1294, are convicted, while the rest are arrested.

"The General Directorate of Prisons is continuing its work in all Institutions for the Execution of Criminal Decisions (IEVP) to guarantee the provision of valid identification documents to all persons with the right to vote, thus enabling them to exercise this constitutional right."

Meanwhile, in the parliamentary elections on May 11, there will also be special voters, imprisoned politicians. The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, will be able to vote in the prison of Durrës, from where he will have to make his choice among the lists of the coastal city. Veliaj is not the only politician voting from prison. Among the socialists are also Ilir Beqja and Jurgis Çyrbja, both of whom are voters for the Durrës District.

Unlike the Socialists, Ilir Meta will have the opportunity to vote for himself, as not only is he a candidate on an open list, but his voting center is located near the "313" prison.

The Democrats also have VIP prisoners. Since September 2024, Ervin Salianji has been serving his sentence in Fier, a district in which he will also vote in the 2025 parliamentary elections. According to the final voter list of the Ministry of Interior, there are over 3.7 million voters for the 2025 parliamentary elections, including those from the diaspora./A2 CNN
