Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu dismissed from office after arrest for corruption

The Turkish Interior Ministry announced today, Sunday, that Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has been dismissed from office following his formal arrest by a court on corruption charges.

The Istanbul city council, where the largest opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has a majority, is expected to elect a person to act as mayor in the coming days, following Imamoglu's dismissal.

According to the ministry, two other mayors in the region have also been removed from office for similar reasons. The development has sparked widespread reactions in Turkish politics, with opposition supporters calling the move politically motivated.
