Two NASA astronauts stranded in space return to Earth after 9 months

The two NASA astronauts who were stranded in space returned to Earth with SpaceX on Tuesday to wrap up a dramatic marathon mission that began with a failed Boeing test flight more than nine months ago.

Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams said goodbye to the International Space Station — their home since last spring — by launching in a SpaceX capsule along with two other astronauts.

The two were expected to leave just a week or so after launching in Boeing's new Starliner crew capsule on June 5. So many problems arose en route to the space station that NASA eventually returned the empty Starliner and transferred the test pilots to SpaceX, delaying their return home.
