Who will replace Michel Barnier? The two main names at Macron's table
French Prime Minister Michel Barnier is expected to resign today after being ousted in a vote of no confidence. His government collapsed after MPs overwhelmingly approved the motion against him, just three months after being appointed by President Emmanuel Macron. This is the first time in more than 60 years that a French government has been ousted by parliament.
Emmanuel Macron is reportedly in talks to appoint a new prime minister ahead of a major ceremony to reopen Notre-Dame Cathedral on Saturday. However, the challenges for any future prime minister remain the same, due to the parliamentary crisis that has blocked the passage of bills. The next parliamentary elections are expected to be held no earlier than July.
The main contenders for the post of prime minister
Sebastien Lecornu
Currently the Minister of Defense, Sebastien Lecornu is one of Macron's closest figures. He has served in the governments of Prime Ministers Michel Barnier, Elisabeth Borne and Gabriel Attal since 2022 and is considered a stable choice for the post.
Francois Bayrou
Another candidate mentioned is Francois Bayrou, a well-known centrist politician. Bayrou was a presidential candidate in 2002, 2007 and 2012 and played a key role in the campaigns that gave Macron the presidency in 2017 and 2022. He is also the leader of the Democratic Movement since its founding in 2007. Both the candidates will face a difficult challenge to restore stability in the governance of the country.
