Chechen leader warns: Not only Mariupol, Russia will attack other cities

Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Russian republic of Chechnya, said that there will be an offensive by Russian forces not only in the besieged port of Mariupol, but also in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities, reports The Guardian.

"There will be an offensive not only in Mariupol, but also in other places, towns and villages," Kadyrov said. "Luhansk and Donetsk - we will completely liberate in the first place and then we will take Kiev and all the other cities."

Kadyrov, who has often described himself as the "infantryman" of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said there should be no doubt about Kiev.

"I assure you: no step will be taken back," Kadyrov said.

Kadyrov has been repeatedly accused by the United States and the European Union of violating rights, which he denies.

Moscow fought two wars with the separatists in Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region in southern Russia, after the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. But since then it has poured large sums of money into the region to rebuild it and given Kadyrov a measure of great autonomy.

The Kremlin describes its actions in Ukraine as a "special operation" to demilitarize and "denazify" its neighbor, and on Sunday Russia intensified its attacks in eastern Ukraine.
