Madeleine Albright, the woman who made history, dies

Dates at the age of 84 Madeleine Albright, the first wife of the US Secretary of State, who helped guide Western foreign policy after the Cold War.

Her death was confirmed in an email to staff at Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategic firm she founded.

Albright was a central figure in the administration of President Bill Clinton, where she first served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations before becoming the country's top diplomat in her second term.

She advocated NATO enlargement, encouraged the alliance to intervene in the Balkans to stop genocide and ethnic cleansing, sought to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons, and defended human rights and democracy across the globe.

In an article in the New York Times last month shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Albright argued that Russian leader Vladimir Putin would make "a historic mistake" in invading Ukraine and warned of devastating costs for his country.
