Sweden confirms the act of sabotage on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines

Swedish officials have confirmed on Friday that the explosions that destroyed parts of the pipelines carrying gas from Russia to Germany were acts of sabotage.

"The analyzes carried out have found signs of explosive materials of some foreign objects", said prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist, who is leading the preliminary investigations.

Ljungqvist has added that technical analyzes are continuing to reach even more reliable conclusions regarding the incident.

Sweden's Prosecutors' Authority has said that "the ongoing investigations will determine whether anyone will be considered a formal suspect in the crime."

Four leaks were discovered in the two gas pipelines – North Stream 1 and 2 – at the end of September.

Investigators already suspected that the explosions were acts of sabotage.

These pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany, have been at the center of geopolitical tensions since Russia has stopped gas supplies to Europe, a decision that the West considers as retaliation for sanctions imposed on Russia after the start of the war in Ukraine.

Although the gas pipelines were not working when the leaks occurred, there was gas inside them that was carried into the water and atmosphere.

Washington and Moscow have rejected any involvement in these incidents./ REL
