Trump expects Netanyahu to discuss Gaza ceasefire

After 21 months of war, hopes for a new ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are growing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is holding an important meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington today.

Trump earlier told reporters that he would be "very tough" with Netanyahu on ending the conflict.

He said he thinks "we'll have a deal" this week.

"We are working to reach the agreement that was discussed, according to the agreed terms," Netanyahu said on the other hand.

"I believe that the conversation with President Trump can help advance this outcome, which we all hope for," he said before departing for the US.

Israel and Hamas - a group designated a terrorist group by the US and other powers - began indirect talks on a US proposal, which envisages a 60-day ceasefire and the release of hostages, on Sunday in Qatar.

However, it is not yet clear whether the key differences that have repeatedly prevented agreement can be overcome.

Netanyahu's visit to the White House is his third since Trump returned to office in January.

It comes after Trump's decision to join Israel's war against Iran, attacking Iranian nuclear plants.

After brokering a ceasefire between the two countries, Trump announced that his focus is now on efforts to stop the war between Israel and Hamas.

It began after the latter attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people and taking hundreds more hostage.

Israel responded with a fierce offensive of attacks on the Gaza Strip, which, according to health authorities there, has killed over 57,000 Palestinians./ REL
