Scorching heat, Greece orders mandatory work holidays

Greek authorities have ordered mandatory work holidays in areas where temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Since Sunday, parts of Greece have been gripped by an extreme heat wave, which is expected to last until Thursday.

The Ministry of Labor banned physical work outdoors and food distribution from 12:00 to 17:00. The order will apply mainly to the central regions of Greece and some islands.

Employers were also asked to offer remote working options. No emergency measures were taken in Athens, as the current heat wave in the capital is not considered unusual.

Meteorologists expect the highest temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, while predicting a slight drop, to around 35 degrees, towards the end of the week. The most extreme temperatures are expected to be recorded in the low-lying areas of the central regions of Greece.

On the islands and along the coast, temperatures are expected to be three to five degrees lower than on the mainland and in urban centers.

Among the most important recommendations for citizens are: avoiding staying outdoors during the hot midday hours, drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, eating light meals, and avoiding outdoor sports activities.

To help the most vulnerable, such as the homeless or those without air conditioning, many cities and municipalities have made air-conditioned spaces available where people can take shelter. High temperatures are also prevailing in other parts of Europe, including the Balkan region./ REL
