From economy to corruption/ WIIW expert for Politiko: Albania is losing the

The emigration of young Albanians remains one of the biggest social and economic challenges for the country, especially in recent years.

Experts point out that the departure of the younger generation is not a temporary phenomenon, but a deep and ongoing one.

Expert from the Vienna International Institute for Economic Studies (WIIW), Ilida Mara, told Politiko.al that this wave is deepening day by day due to numerous factors that go beyond economic reasons.

" Emigration among young Albanians remains persistent and structurally entrenched. As detailed in our 2022 study  , not much has changed, apart from a recent increase in emigration to Albania, which tends to be more transit-oriented than indicating a shift towards the country becoming a destination."

Over the past three decades, migration has been a consistent trend. While economic motivations dominated from 1990 to 2010, more recently there is not one dominant driver – such as better job and life prospects – but many. Economic challenges remain central, but they are increasingly intertwined with broader social and aspirational factors.

"Young people are seeking better employment opportunities, more reliable public services (especially education and healthcare), and an improved quality of life for their families. In addition, widespread dissatisfaction with governance - particularly the high level of corruption - continues to influence decisions to leave ," Mara said./ Suela Gjidede/
