Swarm of bees attacks citizens in France, 24 people end up in hospital

An incident has occurred in the city of Aurillac, France, where a massive bee attack has resulted in 24 people being injured, three of whom are in critical condition.

According to the Cantal prefecture, the attack lasted about 30 minutes on Sunday morning, with numerous passersby repeatedly stung by the bees.

Firefighters and ambulance crews intervened to provide first aid, while police set up a security perimeter to prevent the spread of panic and manage the situation.

Three of the injured were immediately taken to hospital, where they were found to be in serious condition. According to Aurillac mayor Pierre Mathonier, who spoke to BFM TV on Monday, their condition has now improved.

He explained that one of the victims, a 78-year-old man, suffered cardiac arrest, but was revived thanks to immediate CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) intervention.

Authorities believe the attack may have been caused by the presence of hornets, which disturbed a beehive that had been installed on the terrace of a hotel for more than a decade. According to the mayor, the hive has now been removed by a beekeeper and moved outside the city.

Deputy fire chief Michel Cayla told the media that he had never experienced such an event before.

"In terms of the number of injured, the panic that gripped people and the severity of the injuries, it was a shocking situation," he told The Guardian.

French authorities are investigating the full circumstances of the incident and have urged increased caution in areas where beehives or wasps are located.
