Isaac Herzog has been elected as the new President of Israel, while opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are trying to reach an agreement to form a governing coalition,

Deputies voted for the former Labor Party leader and chairman of the Jewish Agency as the new president, making Herzog, 60, the 11th President of the state.

Isaac Herzog is the son of former President Chaim Herzog and will replace Reuven Rivlin. He was elected with 87 votes, while his opponent, Miriam Peretz received only 26.

The election comes amid political unrest in the country, with opposition politicians facing a midnight deadline to present their proposal for a coalition government that would oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Herzog, who comes from a prominent Israeli family, ran unsuccessfully against Netanyahu in the 2013 parliamentary elections.

His father, Chaim Herzog, was Israel's ambassador to the United Nations before being elected president.

His uncle, Abba Eban, was Israel's first minister and ambassador to the United Nations and the United States. His grandfather was the head of the country.

Herzog has served as head of the Jewish Agency, a non-profit organization that works closely with the government to promote immigration to Israel since resigning from parliament. Given his strong ties to the political institution, he was seen as the favorite to win the presidency.
