Antonio Costa does not have a date for Albania's EU membership

The President of the European Council, António Costa, has refused to give a possible date for Albania's membership in the European Union.

Asked by journalists in Tirana about a possible deadline for our country, Costa said that we are living a momentum where the Western Balkans are closer to the EU than ever before and the opportunity must be seized.

Rama's promises that we will join the EU by 2030 seem to be just illusions, as António Costa states that this is not easy and more work is needed.

"We are living very special moments in the world today and in these special moments we more than ever need to accelerate the unification of Europe and all its strength and power.

And that brings us to this momentum for enlargement, of course also for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia if they want to. But also for the Western Balkans, which have shown us before that they will become part of the EU. There is no race or competition here. My wish is that all 6 Western Balkan countries move forward with the accession negotiations, to complete reforms.

This is about the change it will bring, it will also change the mindset. This is not easy. This is the right way to move forward. This week I went to Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia and now here I am in Albania.

Despite the difficulties and problems, all the BP countries have a common objective and desire to become part of the EU, to move forward and open a new chapter. I say to all these countries: 'You can trust the EU!' Trust us.

We have a clear political will in the CoE. We have a clear commitment from the EC that this is the moment we need to achieve results and we must use this moment. What has happened in these countries over the last two years, but also in the EU, has completely changed the mindset and approach. This is possible", declared Costa.
