Xhaçka's mandate, Spiropali is forced to react after the criticism

Speaker of Parliament Elisa Spiropali has reacted to criticism from the US Embassy and the European Union after midnight with the votes of socialist deputies, the transfer to the Constitutional Court of the issue of the mandate of former Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka was prevented.

In a reaction on platform X, Spiropali writes that he has addressed the Venice Commission and that once they receive the opinion on this matter they will act without wasting time.

Elisa Spiropali's reaction:

I fully share the conviction that the implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court by the Parliament is an essential issue, as it is related to the institutional checks and balances in the country's democratic system. That is why I emphasized during the opening of the parliamentary session last week, as a priority, the need for the Assembly to follow the remaining decisions of the Constitutional Court. Yesterday's vote demonstrated that the decision of the Constitutional Court of a year and a half ago, and more recently the one of July 2024, needs the clarification that has been requested for so long.

Precisely for the purpose of obtaining this clarification and putting an end to the ambiguity that has accompanied the Assembly, regarding the way of implementing the decision, I have immediately turned today to the Venice Commission as an instance with indisputable prestige and competence. As soon as we receive from the Venice Commission the relevant opinion, we will act on that opinion without wasting another day.

Late on Thursday evening, the SP once again saved the mandate of deputy Olta Xhaçka, while at the same time the speaker of the Parliament announced that she will seek an opinion from the experts of the Venice Commission, on some questions that have been raised during these two years on the obligation of deputies to vote only PRO, the orders of the Constitution.
