The Socialist Party copies the DP's law on foreign investments, but introduces a dangerous amendment that threatens national security.

The Socialist Party copies the DP's law on foreign investments, but

A few months ago, Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku submitted to the Assembly a comprehensive draft law on the screening of foreign investments, based on European Union regulations and OECD and US standards.

The law aims to protect the country's strategic sectors from investments coming from third parties such as China, Russia or Iran, which do not represent strategic partners for Albania.

The proposal drafted by Tabaku was consulted with international partners and included useful changes to clarify the role of the government and the Assembly in the investment screening process. But the majority shelved the draft law, not considering it for months.

Just a few weeks after the elections, SP MP Eduard Shalsi has submitted a single amendment to an article of the 1993 Foreign Investment Law, which is expected to be discussed today in the Economy Committee.

Tabaku immediately reacted by calling this initiative a "socialist patch" and an attempt to replace a genuine reform with a weak, substandard draft.

“Instead of a serious law, with transparency and structured processes, as the OECD requires, the majority has brought an amateur attempt to wash their hands like Pontius Pilate,” Tabaku declared. She added that “Albania does not have the luxury of being the gateway to insecurity in the region.”

Stressing the strategic importance of this initiative for the country's economic and national security, Tabaku reiterated the Democratic Party's commitment to protecting the public interest and to seeking the approval of its draft law that offers maximum guarantees against risky investments.
