Greece 'on fire' for several days, state of emergency declared on

The Greek state has declared a state of emergency on the island of Chios until July 22 of this year. This is because massive fires are destroying large areas of forests and residential areas, foreign media report.

According to meteorologists, about 25,000 hectares of land have been burned so far, while the fires are advancing rapidly due to strong winds. Smoke has spread up to 500 kilometers away, reaching as far as Crete.

Over 190 firefighters are engaged in the firefighting operation, with forces continuously arriving from Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala and Lesvos. Five fires are active in different areas of the island.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of four villages in the southwest of the island, Vessa, Lithi, Elata and Armolia, while residents of the village of Leptopoda in the north have been warned of a possible evacuation.
