Even though you may not have an appetite, it's important to fuel your body after all that sweating. Even though we're not hungry during the summer months, healthy eating is more important than ever, say many scientists and nutritionists.
Loss and Replacement of Essential Nutrients
Sweating causes massive losses of mineral salts in the body. Heat leads to deficiencies in potassium and sodium and can deplete glucose reserves, which give us energy. During heat, the concentration of salt in the blood increases because the body loses more water than sodium. Replace the losses with water or diluted fruit juice and your body will balance itself.
Potassium loss also occurs when you sweat.
Replace potassium by drinking a glass of orange or apricot juice or eating bananas, grapes, potatoes, yogurt, or dairy products. Berries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and peaches are other good choices.
Magnesium is also lost through sweating. This can be replaced by eating grains.
Glucose Loss and Replacement
During hot weather, glucose stores, which give us energy, are also depleted to the max. They can also be replaced through healthy eating. Choose vegetables that are deep and dark in color, because they contain more vitamins and minerals. For example, eat spinach instead of green salad. Other good choices are broccoli, green peppers, and carrots.
Use as much liquid as possible.
Replacing lost fluids is critical in the summer heat, but be careful what you drink. Stay away from sugary drinks because they are harmful to the body. Also avoid too much caffeine and alcohol. They are diuretics and will make you lose more water.
Remember that food comes first.
Some people think that vitamin pills can replace food, but this is not true. First of all, vitamins and minerals do not provide energy, because they do not provide glucose. Glucose can only be obtained through food. The good news is that the lost substances are replaced through a healthy way of eating during the summer.
Even when mineral salts are lost through sweating, there is no need to take additional supplements.
