14-year-old infected with meningitis, IHP reacts: Bacterial infection is

A 14-year-old boy was urgently admitted to the Tirana University Hospital Center after being diagnosed with meningitis over the weekend. The minor is under the care of doctors.

On the other hand, parents in several schools in Durrës have raised the alarm about the spread of this infection after their children were affected by meningitis and no measures were taken.

Regarding this situation, the Institute of Public Health subsequently reacted on the social network Facebook, providing a more detailed explanation.

"Regarding Neisseria meningitis infection, we emphasize that it is an infectious disease, that is, a bacterial infection that is transmitted rapidly through close and prolonged contact and can also present in fulminant forms."

Meningococcal infection can occur at any age, but there are age groups with a higher affinity.

As for the 14-year-old case, first of all, we wish him a speedy recovery and at the same time we emphasize that he was quickly followed by the Durrës Hospital Emergency Department, conducting neurological examinations due to the state of stupor and severe clinical condition, and assessing this situation, the case with suspected Meningo-Encephalitis (infection of the brain membranes) was transferred to the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital.

Neisseria meningitis infection is an infection that is reported as a result of the implementation of Law No. 51/2016 on the prevention and control of infections and infectious diseases and the data is declared in the electronic system and as such it has not been hidden, but on the contrary it has been reported and recommendations for prophylaxis measures have been followed for family members, 19 health personnel in Durrës, health personnel in the QSUT as well as close contacts in the case's classroom, where 24 students and 6 teachers have received antibiotic prophylaxis, following and respecting the specific Guideline as for any other suspected or confirmed case of Neisseria meningitis.

We emphasize that there is no negligence in clinical and epidemiological follow-up, but the steps have been rigorously followed to implement the Guidelines for the follow-up of prophylaxis and epidemiological investigation.

"The patient is receiving treatment according to the protocol in intensive therapy, for the disease with which he has been diagnosed. His condition is being continuously monitored by the medical team," the IHP statement reads.
