Eurostat: Inflation in March 2.5% due to higher food prices

The change in prices in our country measured with the Eurostat methodology is referring to a higher inflation value in February-March 2025 compared to INSTAT's national measurements.

The Harmonized Price Index (HPI) rose 2.5 percent in February, while the domestic consumer price index rose 2.1 percent in the same month. The HPI represents a harmonized index to measure price changes across all European countries.

In March 2025, compared to the same month last year, the largest price increase of 8.9% was observed in the "Entertainment and culture" group, followed by the groups "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" with 4.1%, "Furniture, household equipment and maintenance" and "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" with 3.1% each, "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" with 2.5%, "Clothing and footwear" with 2.3%, "Educational services" with 1.9%.

Also, prices in the groups "Various goods and services" increased by 1.5%, "Communication" by 1.4%, "Health" by 0.8%, "Rent, water, fuel and energy" by 0.3%. On the other hand, prices in the group "Transport" decreased by 1.3.

While the monthly change measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices in March 2025 is 0.8%.

This change was mainly influenced by the increase in prices of the group “Entertainment and culture” by 3.2%, followed by the groups “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” by 1.5%, “Rent, water, fuel and energy” by 0.4%, “Communication” and “Miscellaneous goods and services” by 0.3% each, “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco” and “Transport” by 0.2% each, “Health” and “Hotels, cafes and restaurants” by 0.1% each. On the other hand, the prices of the group “Furniture, household equipment and maintenance” decreased by 0.1%.

For March, the highest price increase was in Romania with about 5.7 percent, followed by Hungary, Poland, Croatia, while on the other hand, Switzerland ranked with the lowest price increase with only 0.2%, France with 1%. In the EU, the average inflation was 2.5% in February 2025.

CPI and HICP price data are calculated based on prices collected in the same trade units, use the same product classification, and share the same index compilation methodology.

The CPI is the official measure of inflation in Albania, while the HICP is used to monitor the movement of retail prices in European countries, comparing the inflation rate between countries.

The CPI contains 331 products, while the HICP contains 329 products.

The CPI covers only the expenses of private Albanian households made within and outside the country's territory. The CPI covers all expenses made within the country's territory by Albanian households, including private and collective households and the expenses of tourists in Albania./ Monitor
