Munich withdraws from Vlora Airport project

Through a press release, the German nature protection foundation, Euronatur, conveyed the decision of the Economic Committee of the city of Munich to withdraw from its role in the Vlora Airport project, in which it was involved through Munich International Airport (MAI), which had an advisory role.

"Munich is ending its indirect involvement through Munich International Airport as an advisor in the controversial Vlora Airport project," reads a press release from the German environmental organization Euronatur.

"This is a success for EuroNatur, BUND Naturschutz and local organizations defending the cause," the environmentalists' statement continues.

Vlora Airport continues construction work very close to the Narta lagoon, in the Narta-Vjosa protected area, despite calls from environmental activists to stop the project that endangers the continuity of species in this protected landscape, but also the safety of potential flights.

The German Environmental Foundation says their persistence has paid off, at least in terms of German involvement. They added that this victory comes after a two-year struggle they have been waging over the Vlora Airport project.

"Just a month ago, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stated at the ITB fair in Berlin that Munich Airport would operate Vlora Airport. Now this statement has failed," said Gabrier Schwaderer, executive director of Euronatur.

Representatives of the BUND Naturschutz organization stated that they had seen the terrain up close to get an idea of the situation, witnessing the flock of flamingos living in the Narta Lagoon.

"The planes would fly right through this protected area," said Martin Geilhufe, state representative of the Bund Naturschutz organization.

"We call on the Albanian government to stop this project, which in our opinion damages the environment and is also illegal," concluded Schwaderer from Euronatur. Reporter.al
