The SP saved Xhaçka's mandate, the EU delegation reacts: It is not a step in the right direction
The EU delegation reacted after the decision on the mandate of Olta Xhaçka.
In a reaction to Euronews Albania, the EU delegation states that the decision taken yesterday by the Assembly is not "a step in the right direction".
The delegation emphasizes that the implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court by the Parliament is essential for the institutional balance in a country's democracy.
"We have also expressed our concerns in the last report on the Rule of Law in Albania, regarding the fact that some decisions of the Constitutional Court have not been implemented by the Parliament, including in relation to this issue, where the decision of the Constitutional Court dates back more than a year and a half ago (January 2023).
We were encouraged by the fact that the Speaker of the Parliament, during the opening of the parliamentary session last week, emphasized as a priority the need for the Assembly to follow the remaining decisions of the Constitutional Court.
What happened yesterday is not a step in the right direction.
The implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court by the Parliament is an essential issue as it is related to the institutional checks and balances in the democratic system of the country" , states the delegation.
The majority voted to protect Xhaçka's mandate by not approving the motion of 1/10 of the deputies of the Assembly of Albania to send the request for incompatibility to the Constitutional Court.
