Rising fuel prices in Albania / Causes of rising prices, excise tax with the

In Albania there has been a significant increase in fuel prices, a trend that has included European countries. The main reasons: are the increase in the price of oil in international markets, the increase in inflation and the decrease in the supply of European countries by OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries).

According to the latest data, in January in Albania there was an increase in oil prices by 7 ALL / liter or 3.8% more compared to December 2021.

Global Petrol Price ranks Albania among the 20 countries with the highest oil price in the world. Compared to the region, Albania has the highest price of oil and gasoline, followed by Serbia. While Kosovo remains the country with the lowest price.

The reasons why Albania is ranked with the highest price in the region, are related to the level of taxes applied on fuels, fiscal changes approved by the Council of Ministers, as well as inflation.

According to the data of "Open Data Albania", Albanians pay five types of taxes on fuel, thus occupying 52.2% of the final price of oil, a value calculated for January 2022.

Currently for 1 liter of diesel, consumers pay 38 lek excise tax on fuel, 27 lek / liter turnover tax and 3 lek / liter carbon tax. To this value is added VAT of 20%, which also burdens the consumer in the amount of about 32 Lekë / liter, making a total of about 100.2 Lekë / liter only taxes, without taking into account other costs of gas stations operating in Albania.
