"Salmonella Typhimurium", the deadly bacteria found in chicken

New details have come to light regarding the scandal that shocked the public this Friday, where a quantity of 27 tons of chicken fillet imported from Brazil, with the presence of salmonella bacteria, entered the Albanian market by the company "Dimal Inc".

The chicken is contaminated with the bacteria Salmonella Typhimurium, a known pathogen that causes gastrointestinal infections. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Typhimurium is a major enteric pathogen that infects both humans and animals. Infection occurs when individuals ingest contaminated food, causing symptoms such as high fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, while some patients may also have a rash and fever.

According to WHO statistics, last year 9 million cases of typhoid fever were recorded annually, causing about 110,000 deaths. This shows that the consumption of infected meat can have serious consequences for the health of Albanian citizens.

Meanwhile, Albanian authorities, such as the National Food Authority (AKU) and the Ministry of Health, have failed to hold themselves accountable and have not provided sufficient information on how much of the 27 tons of contaminated meat was consumed by citizens. This scandal has raised serious concerns about food safety in Albania and the loss of consumer trust in the institutions responsible for protecting public health.
