After 1 year and 3 months since his arrest in Spain, the former leader of the Durrës gang, Lulzim Berisha, will be extradited this Tuesday at 23:15 to Tirana. He is expected to arrive in Rinas during the evening hours.

Lulzim Berisha had been resisting extradition to Albania for 15 months, but lost his legal battle in Spain. He was caught there in disguise, with a white beard, tattoos on his hands and using a Bulgarian identity.

He had been wanted by Albanian authorities since 2020 for his involvement in the murders of Vajdin Lame and Klodian Saliu in 2005. While the case against Lame was dismissed due to lack of evidence, he is still wanted for the murder of Klodian Saliu, who was shot dead on the Durrës-Maminas road, in the village of Koxhaj.

Lulzim Berisha was previously sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, participation in a criminal organization, and illegal trafficking during the years 1998-2000. His sentence was reduced to 25 years in prison by the High Court in 2014, but two years later, the Durrës Court of Appeal acquitted him, remitting 5 years of his sentence for good behavior.

In 2021, the Supreme Court overturned the Appeals Court's decision and ordered his return to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. In January 2022, the Durrës Prosecutor's Office declared Berisha wanted.

Now, after his extradition to Albania, Lulzim Berisha will face sentencing for the 2005 murders and the completion of the remaining sentence.
