Today is 556 years since the death of Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu

Today, January 17, marks the 556th anniversary of the death of the National Hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu.

Gjergj Kastrioti was born on May 6, 1405 and was the youngest son of Gjon Kastrioti and Princess Vojsava, the last child among 4 sons and 5 daughters.

When Gjergji was born, his father, Gjon Kastrioti, was the ruler of an important state, which stretched at least from the surroundings of Prizren and Tetova in the east to the Adriatic Sea in the west.

Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu died at the age of 63.

He is considered by many Western European countries as the hero who prevented the Ottoman Empire from conquering Western Europe. Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbej remains the legendary figure of the Albanian nation for centuries.

Skenderbeu's death meant the end of Albania's independence, which only thanks to him managed to emerge as a united and independent state. Kruja, which for many years was called the Acropolis of Christianity, resisted only one more siege without its Leader.

Gjergj Kastrioti - Skenderbeu, the National Hero of Albania sealed with his deeds the resistance against the invading Turks in the 15th century and was an example for all subsequent heroes to emulate. He remained in history as a warrior, as a general, a man with principles and ideals. Gjergj Kastrioti was the greatest political and military personality of his time. He was recognized as the commander of all Albanian tribes and defender of Christianity.

He managed to stop the spread of the Turkish hordes in the Balkans for 25 years without losing a single battle. With his heroic struggle, he managed to win the admiration of all Christian Europe.

In Albania, Skenderbeu is a legend, the true image of a hero, a demigod who was always on the front line of the war, who never hesitated to sacrifice his life for his ideals, for what he believed in, for the homeland and his comrades in arms.

Today in Albania his memory is quite alive, and so in his honor, from the day he died, his last name became an honor name for boys.

And so people name their children, so that these children resemble this Hero. For this reason, in Albania it is an honor to be called Kastriot, but also a great responsibility to be able to honor this name at any time.
