When the French revolutionaries attacked the Bastille prison in 1789, in pursuit of freedom and equality, they had not imagined how quickly democratic rights would spread even after 200 years. Currently, most countries globally can be called 'genuine democracy'.

The countries that function and govern today as a democratic system do not provide complete data on how many people feel free under democratic rule, how many people have democratic political rights, and how their numbers have changed over the years.

The answer to these questions is given to us by a report of Our World in Data , based on the political regimes that rule today in the countries of the world.

Very few people had democratic political rights in the 19th century. In the 1800s, almost everyone lived in regimes classified as closed autocracies by RoW. No country was a democracy and only 16 million people lived in two countries classified as electoral autocracies: the United Kingdom and the United States.

Albania

From 1789 to 1937, globally and for the region of Europe, Albania was a country under the regime of electoral autocracy. That is, Albanians had the right to elect the executive and legislative head, but lacked some rights, such as freedom of expression and opinion.

From 2005 until today, Albania is ranked in the countries of the electoral democracy regime, where citizens have the right to participate in meaningful, free, fair and multi-party elections.

How many people enjoy democratic rights?

Most people continued to live in closed autocracies during the 19th century, where 5 out of 6 people still had few political rights until 1900, while those who did not live primarily in electoral autocracies in America and Western Europe.

Only 17 million people in Australia, Belgium and Switzerland enjoyed a wide range of electoral and liberal political rights. Another 41 million in France and New Zealand enjoyed many democratic (but not liberal) political rights.

In 1998, according to the report , in Albania , about 3.11 million inhabitants enjoyed democratic rights in relation to European countries. While for 2012, this number has decreased significantly in relation to the population of the country. At least 2.91 million people turn out to have had democratic rights, including the right to vote, freedom of expression and opinion.
