Born in Rome, Wertmüller claimed to have been expelled from dozens of Catholic schools as a child and developed an early love of comic books (especially "Flash Gordon") and Soviet theater. Through friends, she met the legendary film director Federico Fellini, who quickly became her mentor.

Fellini hired Wertmüller as an assistant director on "8½" in 1963, the same year in which she made her artistic directorial debut with "The Basilisks", which won her the first prize for Best Director in Locarno Film Festival.

In 1972, she made her Cannes debut with "Mimi's Seduction", a satire of male libido, returning the following year with "Love and Anarchy".

In 1975, she premiered her film "Swept Away", which was reproduced 27 years later by Guy Ritchie and Madonna.

Wertmüller's last feature film as a director was in 2004 "Too Much Romance… It's Time for Stuffed Peppers".

In 2019, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as well as received an honorary Oscar for her achievements in films.
