One of the best-known names in Greece's underworld, 44-year-old Vangelis Zampounis, known by the nickname "Zambon", was killed in an ambush outside his gas station in Neo Kosmos.

According to the Greek media , the 44-year-old was accused of being the head of a criminal group of hired killers. There was also an assassination attempt on him in 2018 in Piraeus.

The perpetrators of the murder were allegedly three people who rode in a luxury Lexus. They approached the 44-year-old's car, which was parked in front of the gas station owned by him, at the intersection of Frantzis and Ilias Ilios streets, and shot him with three Kalashnikovs.

The perpetrators apparently knew the route the victim was taking and shot him until they were sure there would be no hope of escape.

The 44-year-old fell dead to the ground, while his black jeep was riddled with bullets. The police found at least 81 shell casings at the scene.
