Analysis: American voters face a new presidential campaign

Voters in the United States are facing a new presidential campaign, after President Joe Biden withdrew from running for a second term and Vice President Kamala Harris is likely to be the Democratic nominee to face Donald Trump in the November elections. Voice of America correspondent Scott Stearns tells us about the reactions of some American voters on these changes in the presidential campaign. In Joe Biden's hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, voter Eric Boylan says Democrats had no choice but to push him out of the race.

"He is a very good leader. But I also agree with the idea that his time is up and it's time for him to step aside and make way for someone else ," Boylan told voters.

Voter Kristine Stoll says that if Mr. Biden is not fit to be a candidate, then he should not even be president.

"He should have retired a long time ago. He needs to leave the White House. "His mental state is not stable enough to lead this country," said Kristine Stoll, a voter in Pennsylvania.

Voter Daniel Brennan shares the opinion that the appointment of Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate of the Democratic Party increases the possibilities for this political force to score a victory against the candidate of the Republican Party, Donald Trump.

"The polls put Harris well ahead of Trump. I think she has a real chance to win."

Voter Bill Mills who is visiting Washington says that Mrs. Harris has her own responsibility in the failure of President Biden's administration in the economic sector.

"We are faced with increases in the prices of food, fuel and the cost of living. Our life has become more difficult now. Vice President Harris is responsible for this. Therefore, it will be very difficult to change this opinion since the economy has hit our lives", he says.

In Michigan, pollster Jason Potts says the change in presidential candidate increases the chances of the Democratic Party gaining more support from young voters.

"I think they expected a stronger candidate to emerge. We will see if this candidate is Kamala. But she definitely has more energy," says Mr. Potts.

As vice president, Ms. Harris has made efforts to get illegal immigration under control.

Florida voter Ran Gil says that because she failed to control the border, she can't be president.

"Kamala has no value. Kamala is worse than Joe. They are the same. I do not believe that anyone will vote for Kamala. Nothing supports it. She had a task, to manage the issue of the border".

In Washington, voter Alicia Jefferson hopes people won't limit themselves to the fact that the vice president is a black woman, but will appreciate her accomplishments.

"I hope people get beyond race and appreciate it. But we live in a world that some people will appreciate, some will not. I hope people don't use her background to prevent her from running the White House," said voter Jefferson.

New York pollster Andrew Varshavsky says any Democratic candidate will have a hard time beating Mr. Trump.

"Even if Mr. Biden had stayed in the race, or whoever will be a candidate now, it will be difficult to win against Trump. I'm a democrat. I believe that it will be difficult for us to win this race regardless of what happens", says Mr. Varshavsky.

Ms. Harris seems to have secured the support of the necessary number of delegates to be the party's nominee, but she must wait for the Democratic National Assembly next month for her to officially receive the nomination of her political force to be the candidate she wants. to challenge Donald Trump, on November 5./ VOA
