The government falls in France, the prime minister resigns

Opposition lawmakers ousted France's government on Wednesday, deepening a political crisis in the European Union's second-largest economy and undermining the country's capacity to pass laws and control a high budget deficit.

Far-right and far-left lawmakers joined in support of a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his government. The majority of legislators, with 331 votes, supported the motion.

Prime Minister Barnier is expected to hand in his and his government's resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday.

According to the presidential palace, President Macron will address the French people with a speech on Thursday,

This is the first time since 1962 that a French government has lost a vote of confidence. This time, President Macron brought about the crisis by calling early elections in June, which resulted in a divided parliament.

With a president with waning powers, France now risks ending the year without a stable government or budget for 2025, although the Constitution allows for special measures that would prevent a government shutdown, as happens in the United States.

Political turmoil in France will further weaken the European Union, which is also facing the collapse of the governing coalition in Germany just weeks before US President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House.
