Britain imposes new sanctions on Belarus

Britain announced the imposition of new sanctions on Belarus due to Minsk's role in helping the Russian occupation of Ukraine. The sanctions also include import bans and new measures aimed at preventing online propaganda.

Belarus, led by Alyaksandr Lukashenka since 1994, is Russia's staunchest ally among the former Soviet states and allowed its territory to be used for the Kremlin to launch its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Last month, Russia decided to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory.

"This new package of sanctions increases economic pressure on Lukashenka and his regime, which actively supports Russia's war effort and ignores Ukraine's territorial integrity," British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement.

The new package of sanctions includes a ban on imports of gold, cement, timber and plastics from Russia and also bans exports from Britain to Belarus of cash and machinery, as well as other goods, technology and consumables. to produce chemical and biological weapons.

Britain also said it would be able to prevent Belarusian media companies from "distributing propaganda in the UK" through social media companies and internet service providers by restricting their access to the internet.

The British government also announced that it will take steps to punish entities that try to avoid sanctions, including through the limitation of funds to Belarus, but also other restrictions./REL
