Germany moves ahead with plan to tighten immigration policy

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's German government has pushed ahead with plans to tighten asylum-seeker admissions policies introduced after deadly knife attacks rocked Germany, AFP reports.

One of the main measures of the plan presented at the end of August foresees the cancellation of aid for asylum seekers who entered another EU country before arriving in Germany.

Parties in Scholz's coalition of Social Democrats (SPD), formed with the Greens and liberals, have added exceptions. But the cancellation of the aid will not apply if there are children involved.

"We do not want to cause impoverishment among asylum seekers whose responsibility is another EU member state," explains SPD MP Dirk Wiese in a letter addressed to colleagues in the parliamentary group.
