Greece and Germany agree on arms supplies to Ukraine

Chancellor Olaf Scholz says Germany is working on an agreement with Greece in order for Athens to send old military equipment to Ukraine and receive German infantry fighting equipment.

"We will offer Greece German infantry fighting equipment, " he told reporters after a two-day EU summit in Brussels, adding that he had reached an agreement with the Greek prime minister.

Scholz gave no details on what kind of combat vehicles Berlin would hand over to Greece - or what kind of weapons Athens would hand over to Kiev.

"The defense ministers will work out the details and implement this agreement quickly ," he said.

According to a REUTERS source, Berlin intends to deliver to Greece about 100 old Marder IFVs owned by arms manufacturer Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE).

Athens, in turn, would supply Ukraine with Soviet-style BMP IFV, the source told Reuters.

Germany has been criticized for dragging its feet on heavy weapons shipments to Kiev.
