Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has called Donald Trump to accept the loss of the election and congratulate him on his victory, a senior Harris aide has said, reports Sky News .

"They discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being president for all Americans," the aide said.

Harris spent the morning and afternoon working on her speech, which is expected to be delivered around 9 p.m.

One of Harris' campaign aides said they had spent time working on a speech that would tell the public to "hold back" and be patient, because of the expectation that the election result could take longer to was recognized, as in 2020.

Republican candidate Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States, marking a remarkable comeback.

With a victory in Wisconsin, Trump secured 277 of the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the presidency.
