China retaliates against the US with a 125% tariff

China announced on Friday that it has increased tariffs on American goods from 84 percent to 125 percent, responding to US President Donald Trump, who days earlier increased tariffs on Chinese goods to 145 percent.

Beijing's new tariff on goods imported from the United States will take effect on Saturday.

China had warned that it would fight the US tariffs with countermeasures, calling Trump's actions "economic bullying".

Trump's actions on tariffs against countries around the world have caused business leaders to warn of a possible economic recession. Some of the US's largest trading partners retaliated by imposing tariffs on American goods, but Trump announced a 90-day suspension.

But, Trump and China continued to slap reciprocal tariffs on each other.

“The US, by raising abnormal tariffs on China, has become a numbers game, which has no practical economic significance, and will become a joke in the history of the world economy,” a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Finance said in a statement.

“However, if the US insists on continuing to significantly infringe on China’s interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end,” he said.

China's Ministry of Commerce said it will file another complaint with the World Trade Organization against US tariffs.

Last week, Beijing suspended imports of sorghum and poultry from some American companies, imposed more export controls on rare earth minerals, which are essential for various technologies, and placed several dozen American companies on lists that prohibit Chinese companies from selling them dual-use goods.

Given the size of the two economies, experts fear there will be global economic turmoil.

WTO chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said earlier this week that the trade war between the US and China "could seriously damage the global economic outlook."/ REL
