The French authorities confirm: 8 people lost their lives in the sinking raft

Eight people have lost their lives overnight while trying to cross the Channel from France to England, French police said, BBC writes .
Rescue services were alerted after the vessel ran into difficulties in waters north of Boulogne-sur-mer in the northern Pas-de-Calais region after 01:00 local time (00:00 BST).
The dinghy had about 50 people on board and began to sink not long after leaving the shore.

The French coast guard said the ship was seen drifting towards a beach in the town of Ambleteuse, but rescue teams were unable to provide help from the sea.
On the beach, emergency services treated 53 people and confirmed eight dead, the coast guard said. No other people were found during the search at sea.
The incident comes less than two weeks after 12 people, including six children and a pregnant woman, died when a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank in what was the deadliest loss in the Channel this year.

There have been a number of attempts to cross the Channel in the last two days of calmer weather.
French maritime authorities said 200 people were rescued in a 24-hour period on Friday and Saturday.
