The war in Ukraine, UN: Stop the attacks on the largest nuclear power plant in

UN chief Antonio Guterres has called for an end to military operations around Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine has been hit since last Friday, with Russian and Ukrainian forces blaming each other for the attacks.

"Any attack on nuclear plants is a suicidal thing," the UN Secretary-General told reporters in Tokyo, adding that international inspectors should be allowed to enter the nuclear plant immediately.

"I hope these attacks will end," Guterres said.

The comments from the UN chief come after Ukraine's state-run energy company said on Sunday that a worker at the Zaporizhzhia plant was injured by Russian shelling on Saturday night.

Radiation monitoring sensors were also damaged, Energoatom said.

Speaking in Toyoko, Guterres echoed warnings he made earlier last week about nuclear dangers to humanity, which he said were just steps away from nuclear annihilation.

The Zaporizhzhia factory was captured by Russian forces in the opening phase of the war in Ukraine, but is still run by Ukrainian workers.

The factory was also shelled on Friday, with Russia again blaming Ukraine for the incident.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) raised grave concerns on Saturday about the bombing a day earlier in Zaporizhzhia, warning of a possible "nuclear catastrophe".
