Pope Francis' final message: There is no peace without freedom of religion,

Pope Francis' Easter message was a call for peace and "respect for the views of others." An aide read the message on his behalf:

"There can be no peace without religious freedom, freedom of thought, freedom of expression."

In his final address, the Pope remembered the people of Gaza, especially the Christian population there, as the conflict "causes death and destruction" and creates a "deplorable humanitarian situation."

He also called rising anti-Semitism globally "very worrying."

"What a great thirst for death, for murder we see in many conflicts that are erupting in different parts of the world," he said. "I express my solidarity with the suffering... of all the Israeli people and the Palestinian people," his message said. "Call for a ceasefire, release the prisoners and help a people who are suffering from hunger and who aspire to a peaceful future."

The Pope also encouraged all parties involved in the war in Ukraine to "continue efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace."
