Tobacco advertising in print media is banned in Switzerland

Tobacco advertising should be banned in print media. The Council of States voted on Thursday for this restriction. The revision of the law concretizes the popular initiative accepted in 2022 by the people.

The Council of States received the project of the Federal Council without delay. But the right would have liked to reduce the scope of some provisions, especially the one regarding advertising in newspapers that goes too far, according to the committee's rapporteur Damian Müller (PLR/LU), writes RTS.

Advertising should have been allowed if placed within publications sold by subscription to adults. But the Center has clearly tipped the scales for strict implementation of the initiative that requires that tobacco advertising not reach young people.

Children have access to the newspapers their parents subscribe to, that much is clear.

With such a change, the ban would have no effect on newspapers such as Le Temps, NZZ or L'Illustré, argued Pirmin Bischof (Le Center/SO). It is about respecting the will of the people, added Marianne Maret (Le Center/VS). "Kids have access to the newspapers their parents subscribe to, that's for sure."

Advertising targets prospective consumers, according to Valaisanne.
